Finding your first kitchen job in Cameroon: where should you start?

You enjoy cooking and want to work in a restaurant, hotel or small food business in Cameroon. To find your first kitchen job, start with a role suited to your level, then explain what you can already do and what you still need to learn.

Kamerjob vacancies show different requirements: some accept beginners, while others ask for training or specific experience. This guide offers practical steps, two illustrated listings and fictional examples to adapt to your background.

1. Look for a role where you can learn

Try several job titles: “aide-cuisinier” (kitchen assistant), “commis de cuisine”, “assistant cuisine” and “employé de cuisine”. Read duties and requirements rather than relying on the title. One commis vacancy may accept beginners while another requires several years’ experience.

  • Kitchen assistant: support with preparation and organisation, following the supervisor’s instructions.
  • Commis: ingredient preparation, help with dishes and workstation cleaning, depending on the establishment.
  • Cook: some preparation may be assigned with greater independence; check expectations.
  • Chef: the role may include menus, stock and supervision. Do not assume it is an entry-level position.

“Beginners accepted” does not remove the other requirements. If a vacancy requires a qualification you do not have, do not claim to hold it.

2. Kamerjob example: reading a beginner-friendly commis vacancy

The Commis de cuisine listing at La Maison OMAJ in Douala mentions ingredient preparation, assisting the chef, cleaning and receiving supplies. It asks for culinary training or equivalent experience and states that motivated beginners are accepted.

What to prepare: a clear CV, an example of preparation you can handle, your actual availability and questions about supervision. The listing also mentions weekends and public holidays. Ask about hours, rest days, the contract and pay, as not all conditions are detailed.

3. Take stock of your skills without inventing a job

Preparing family meals, helping a small business or contributing to an event can give you useful examples. Explain the context, frequency, tasks and quantities only when you know them. Family support should not become a fictitious paid position on your CV.

Fictional example: “Occasional support for a family food business on some Saturdays over three months: arranging ingredients, preparation under instructions and cleaning equipment.”

List the equipment you can use and tasks for which you need a demonstration. Do not claim HACCP training or certification you have not completed or obtained.

4. Look for vacancies that include learning opportunities

The former Aide-Cuisinier(ère) listing from AB-SAL Trading Company in Douala stated that motivated beginners would be accepted and trained to support the kitchen and bar.

For a similar vacancy that is still open, ask who will train you, on which tasks, for how long and under what conditions. “Training provided” does not by itself explain pay, hours or arrangements for any trial period.

5. Prepare a simple, tailored application

Your CV can fit on one page: relevant contact details, town, target role, relevant activities, skills, languages and availability. Describe the education you actually attended. The Kamerjob CV builder can help with formatting; see our guide to writing a CV without qualifications or formal experience.

Message to adapt: “Hello, I would like to apply for the kitchen assistant position [reference] advertised on Kamerjob. I am new to professional catering. I have already [actual activity] and can [two specific tasks]. I am available [days/hours] in [town]. I am attaching my CV as instructed in the advert. Is the role still available, and what support do you provide for beginners?”

On Kamerjob’s job listings, search one title at a time and open the complete vacancy. Follow the specified channel: email, WhatsApp, an external form or an in-person application. Clicking “Apply” does not always mean your CV has been sent.

6. Prepare for the interview and clarify the conditions

Practise explaining a task you completed, an instruction you followed and an unexpected issue you reported. You can say: “I have not used this machine yet; I will need a demonstration.” Ask about the establishment’s procedures and supervision, particularly for hygiene and equipment use.

  • Which dishes and tasks will be assigned to the beginner?
  • Who will give instructions and check the work?
  • What are the hours, breaks, rest days and arrangements for getting home?
  • What is the pay, payment date and any expense you must cover?
  • What contract is proposed, and what are the duration, duties, supervision and payment terms for any trial?

Do not begin a working day on a vague “we will discuss it later” basis. Verify the recruiter before sharing personal documents, and never disclose payment or login codes.

A practical plan for this week

  1. List five tasks you can perform and two you want to learn.
  2. Prepare your CV and a thirty-second introduction.
  3. Find three vacancies compatible with your level and travel arrangements.
  4. Tailor each application and record the date sent.
  5. Prepare your questions before any interview or trial.

Your first application should show your actual level, reliability and ability to learn. Look for duties that match your current skills, then gradually build experience you can explain and have confirmed.
