Excel, Google Docs and tracking tools: which skills should you present?

“Proficient in office tools” does not explain what you can deliver. For virtual assistance, show a readable document, reliable tracker and clear collaboration habits.
1. Build a useful spreadsheet
Create fictional requests with reference, date, owner, deadline, status and next action. Demonstrate sorting and filtering without disrupting rows. Use consistent dates and review duplicates before handling them.
Explain formulas and test them on simple cases. Using a template without understanding its calculations does not establish advanced ability.
2. Produce a readable document
In Google Docs or a word processor, prepare fictional meeting notes with headings, decisions, owners and dates. Demonstrate comments and suggested changes. Identify the selected version and approval needed.
3. Show team follow-up
| Fictional task | Status | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Prepare meeting | Awaiting approval | Client: confirm agenda. |
| Format report | In progress | Assistant: check headings. |
| Send summary | Blocked | Wait for sending approval. |
A spreadsheet or task board can work. People should understand progress and who needs to act.
4. Explain sharing
Demonstrate viewing, commenting and editing permissions where available. Request appropriate access and check recipients. Use fictional data in demonstrations.
5. Describe the skill accurately
“Personal project: filterable task tracker, deadline checks and structured meeting summary with decisions and owners.”
