Finding your first community health job in Cameroon: where to start

Would you like to work with communities and help people access health information and services? Start your community health job search in Cameroon by understanding the duties and required qualifications. Motivation matters, but it does not replace the training a task requires.
1. Read the duties behind the title
A vacancy may involve community mobilisation, awareness activities, reception, activity tracking or referral to services. These roles are not interchangeable with nursing, care assistant or medical roles. Check the qualification, training, languages, work area and travel requirements.
WHO resources on community health workers provide general context. Actual responsibilities depend on the programme, training and rules applicable to the role.
2. Identify relevant skills
| Actual experience | Skill to explain |
|---|---|
| Community activities | Preparing an activity, welcoming people and clarifying questions. |
| Supervised survey work | Following a questionnaire and reporting missing data. |
| Event organisation | Coordinating schedules, materials and team handovers. |
Describe your exact contribution. Volunteering does not automatically amount to clinical experience. Explain who supervised you and what you were authorised to do.
3. Prepare a simple demonstration
Fictional exercise: you help organise an information session in a Yaoundé neighbourhood. A supervisor supplies approved material. You arrange reception, confirm the venue, prepare equipment and record questions for referral. Do not invent medical recommendations to fill gaps in the material.
Create a plan with objective, audience, tasks, responsible person, equipment and expected report. Use fictional data only. Beneficiary lists and health information should never become portfolio material.
4. Write a targeted application
Adaptable example: “My community volunteering taught me to organise activities and listen to participants. I would like to apply these skills within your programme’s training and supervision arrangements.”
If you speak a local language, specify the contexts in which you can communicate. Do not claim medical interpreting skills without relevant training.
5. Ask about supervision
Ask who supervises the work, which messages are approved, how to refer requests beyond your role and which tools are provided. Clarify employment status, pay or allowances, travel and safety instructions. Distinguish paid work, internships and volunteering.
