Finding your first cashier or shelf-stocking job in Cameroon: where to start

Looking for your first job in a shop or supermarket in Cameroon? Cashier and shelf-stocking work requires accuracy, organisation and customer service. Understand the duties and prepare examples of what you can actually do.

1. Distinguish the duties

Cashier work may include greeting customers, recording items, checking payment and issuing receipts according to procedure. Shelf work may include arranging goods, replenishment, matching products to labels and reporting problems.

A general store role may combine them. Check hours, tasks, training and tools in Kamerjob vacancies. The same title can mean different work in different shops.

2. Identify relevant experience

Helping a family business, welcoming customers or organising goods can provide useful examples. State the context, frequency and your role. Do not turn occasional help into store management experience.

ExperienceSkill to explain
Informal salesListening, basic calculations and quantity checks.
ReceptionCourtesy and directing requests.
Organising goodsSorting, counting and reporting misplaced items.

3. Prepare a cashier exercise

Fictional example: a purchase totals XAF 3,750 and the customer gives XAF 5,000. Change is XAF 1,250. Explain how you check the total, state the amount received and recount change according to instructions.

For mobile payments, check confirmation through the authorised business channel before treating payment as received. A customer’s screenshot does not replace this check. Do not use your personal account for shop payments.

4. Show a shelf-work method

Practise a fictional case where an item does not match the label underneath. Check the reference and inform the supervisor before changing a price. Explain how you report damaged packaging, follow storage instructions and keep access clear.

5. Send a clear application

Adaptable message: “I am applying for the advertised role. Helping a family business taught me to welcome customers, check quantities and maintain organised displays. I am ready to learn your checkout system and procedures.”

Use only true details. Ask about job conditions, supervision, breaks, closing schedules and training. Check the listing date and required documents before applying.
