Agricultural technician: how to present your skills in a job application

For an agricultural technician role, recruiters need to understand what you can observe, do and report. Link skills to a crop, timeframe and specific tasks without claiming the whole farm’s results.

1. Explain your experience

State crops, general location, duration and role. Distinguish internships, employment, family farming and practical training. Identify independent tasks, supervised work and activities you only observed.

2. Connect skills to evidence

SkillPossible evidence
Crop observationDated record with plot, observations and reported concern.
OrganisationTask schedule and progress report.
Operational trackingRegister completed according to supervisor instructions.

Use authorised anonymised material or fictional examples. Obtain permission before sharing farm photographs.

3. Use specific wording

Fictional example: “Vegetable-production internship: daily observation of two demonstration plots, operation records and reporting anomalies to the supervising technician. Helped prepare tasks under instructions.”

For area or yield figures, explain the measurement and your contribution. Without reliable data, describe tasks rather than inventing production improvements.

4. Show professional judgement

A damaged leaf does not establish its cause. Explain how you record symptoms and alert a qualified person. Do not claim competence with agricultural products or machinery without appropriate training and authorisation.

5. Tailor the application

Select two examples matching the vacancy. State actual availability, mobility, languages and tracking tools. Prepare an interview case covering situation, action, checks and limits.
