IT support: how can you demonstrate your troubleshooting skills?

“I can fix computers” rarely gives a recruiter enough evidence. For an IT support role in Cameroon, show how you listen, test a hypothesis, obtain permission for changes and confirm that the service works again.
1. Describe a complete case
Prepare a one-page record covering context, symptom, checks, action and outcome. Label it accurately as an internship task, voluntary assistance or personal exercise. Helping at home is useful experience, but should not be presented as paid employment.
Fictional lab example: a workstation cannot print. I check whether other users are affected, then inspect printer status, connectivity and the print queue. I identify a blocked job. After an authorised correction, both a test page and a user document print successfully. I document the checks and solution.
2. Bring readable evidence
- An anonymised intervention record or a clearly fictional example.
- Two screenshots from your own lab showing the issue and the result.
- A short procedure another technician can follow.
Remove names, addresses, identifiers and company information. Explain what each test establishes and what you would check next; a command screenshot alone says little about your reasoning.
3. Explain your boundaries
Reinstalling a system should not be your automatic first response. Discuss data preservation, backups, potential disruption and authorisation. Escalate issues outside your responsibilities with the evidence already collected.
4. Use the case in your application
CV wording, only if accurate: “Personal project: diagnosed a printing incident, performed functional checks and wrote a resolution procedure.”
Interview: “I first established whether the issue affected one user or several. I can show my tests and explain why I chose that solution.”
5. Prepare two distinct examples
Select different incidents, such as printing and connectivity. State your exact contribution, the verified outcome and any point requiring escalation. A small, well-explained portfolio makes early experience easier to assess.
