Bilingual customer service: how to demonstrate your French and English skills?

Writing “bilingual” on a CV implies an ability to understand and respond in two languages. Demonstrate actual spoken and written tasks rather than relying on a label.

Describe specific tasks

Can you answer calls, understand complaints, read instructions and write updates? Ability may differ by task. Explain practised situations and support needed without inventing certification scores.

“French: professional spoken and written communication. English: simple enquiries and written updates; complex cases require review.”

Adapt this example to your actual level.

Use the same scenario in both languages

Fictional case: a customer requests a status update. Preserve facts, limits and next contact in both responses.

FR : « Votre demande fictive B-06 est en cours de vérification. Je vous transmettrai une mise à jour demain avant 14 h. Ce retour ne garantit pas encore la résolution. »

EN: “Your fictional request B-06 is being reviewed. I will provide an update tomorrow before 2 pm. This update does not yet guarantee resolution.”

Do not translate an update promise into a resolution promise. Check dates, amounts, references and conditions carefully.

Practise understanding

ExerciseEvidence
Listen to a simulated enquiryAccurate paraphrasing
Read an instructionIdentify the action and limit
Write a replyClear, accurate, professional wording

Ask for repetition or clarification instead of guessing. Practise varied accents and speaking speeds without claiming universal comprehension.

Build honest evidence

Prepare fictional replies and a brief introduction in each language. Disclose translation or correction assistance so recruiters can distinguish independent work.

Include genuine certification names, dates and results where relevant. Certificates do not replace an employer’s assessment.

Follow assessment rules

Respect permitted tools and time limits. Flag unfamiliar terms and explain how you would verify them. A credible application shows your actual level and learning ability while avoiding customer commitments you do not fully understand.
