Fixed salary, commissions and targets: questions to ask before accepting

A sales offer may include fixed pay, commissions or target bonuses. Before accepting, ask how each part is calculated and when it is paid. A percentage without a defined base is not enough to assess an offer.
1. Establish the proposed arrangement
Clarify status, duration, hours and duties: employment, a service assignment or another stated arrangement. Understand commitments and expense treatment before starting. Request a written proposal and retain the documents provided.
For fixed pay, ask about amount, gross or net basis, payment frequency and any conditions. For variable pay, distinguish commission, target bonus and combined schemes. Estimated earnings are not necessarily guaranteed.
2. Understand the commission
| Point | Question |
|---|---|
| Base | Does the rate apply to invoiced sales, received payments, margin or another amount? |
| Trigger | Does commission start with the first sale or only above a threshold? |
| Attribution | How are deals shared between contributors? |
| Adjustments | What happens with returns, cancellations or late payments? |
| Payment | When is it paid, and what calculation statement is provided? |
3. Request worked examples
Fictional exercise, not a market rate or legal assessment: monthly fixed pay of 100,000 FCFA plus 3% of 500,000 FCFA in eligible received payments, with no other conditions in this exercise. Commission is 15,000 FCFA; the calculated total is 115,000 FCFA before any applicable deductions.
If only 300,000 FCFA qualifies, commission becomes 9,000 FCFA. Also ask for calculations covering no sales, results below target and a cancelled order. These reveal conditions a percentage alone does not explain.
4. Connect targets and resources
Which product, territory, portfolio and assessment period? Is there training or a ramp-up phase? Who provides contacts, phone, materials and transport? How are expenses advanced or reimbursed? Separate compensation from reimbursement of business costs.
Ask how targets are communicated, tracked and changed. Clarify your authority over prices, discounts, customer credit and payment collection.
5. Confirm outstanding points
“Thank you for the proposal. Before confirming, could you specify fixed pay, commission base, trigger conditions, targets, payment date and travel-expense arrangements in writing?”
Have unclear clauses explained before committing. For Cameroon employment-law questions, consult applicable texts or a qualified adviser. The ILO NATLEX entry for Cameroon’s Labour Code is a documentary starting point.
