How to prepare for an industrial maintenance interview

A technical interview assesses reasoning as well as knowledge. You may discuss an intervention, interpret symptoms or explain a report. Prepare examples matching the role’s equipment and level.

Review the vacancy and CV

Identify mechanical, electrical, automation, utilities or documentation duties. For every tool listed, prepare a task you actually performed. Distinguish training, observation and workplace use.

Give a one-minute introduction covering training, relevant experience, contribution and goals. Do not claim independence you did not have.

Clearly labelled academic exercises are acceptable. Do not invent dramatic repairs.

Reason before proposing action

Fictional case: equipment stops intermittently. Start with identification, available information, operating context and history. A symptom alone does not establish that a component needs replacement.

“I clarify the report and my intervention limits. I prepare proposed checks for review under the instructions, separate facts from hypotheses and record confirmed findings.”

Explain the need for a check without improvising energised testing. Actual work requires appropriate conditions, competence and authorisation.

Handle unfamiliar questions

State what you know and what you would verify in documentation or with the supervisor. Describe transferable skills without claiming mastery of unfamiliar equipment.

Clarify practical-test scope, supervision and instructions. Ambiguity does not justify bypassing safeguards.

Ask about the role

  • Which equipment and priorities will I support?
  • What training and supervision are provided?
  • Who approves work and return to service?
  • What hours, possible on-call duties and conditions apply?

Demonstrate reliability and learning ability. Record the response timeline and clarifications afterwards.
