How to succeed in an IT support technician interview

An IT support interview tests your reasoning as well as your knowledge. Employers need someone who can understand a request, help a user and pass on an incident without losing important information.

1. Introduce yourself in relation to the role

In one minute, cover your training, one relevant experience or project, and the tasks you can handle. Read the vacancy carefully: on-site support, remote assistance and network administration involve different levels of independence.

Example to adapt: “I am starting my career in IT support. During my internship I helped prepare workstations under supervision. In my personal lab I documented printing and connectivity incidents. I would like to develop in a team that tracks requests and shares procedures.”

2. Explain your approach

If asked what you would do when the internet stops working, first ask when it started, which device and services are affected, and whether other users have the same issue. Describe checks in sequence and when you would escalate. Do not announce a cause before testing it.

3. Practise speaking to a user

Fictional role-play: “I understand this is blocking your work. What message can you see? May I check the connection with you? I will explain any changes first and keep you updated.”

Avoid blame and unnecessary jargon. If you do not know a technical answer, explain how you would consult documentation and seek help.

4. Bring a small piece of evidence

A troubleshooting record or lab diagram is enough to start a discussion. Distinguish tasks you performed, observed or completed under supervision. Never show passwords or confidential information from a previous employer.

5. Ask useful questions

  • Which incidents are most common?
  • How are requests logged and prioritised?
  • What guidance is available for juniors?
  • Does the job involve travel, on-call work or out-of-hours interventions?

Afterwards, record what to revise and any follow-up agreed. Honest, structured answers build credibility.
