How to prepare for a storekeeper or inventory-management interview

An interviewer may ask you to describe receiving goods, read a stock card or respond to a quantity discrepancy. Prepare your method and specific examples rather than memorised answers unrelated to your experience.

Understand the role first

Review receiving, picking, data entry, stocktaking or supervision duties in the advertisement. Check products, hours and tools. A stockroom assistant and a manager overseeing several zones have different responsibilities.

Prepare a short introduction covering your background, relevant tasks and learning goals. Do not invent software or equipment experience.

Prepare three examples

SituationWhat to explain
ReceivingReferences, unit, quantities and supporting record
StocktakingZone, count, traceability and discrepancies
Urgent orderApproved priority, checking and communication

Separate context, action and result. Clearly identify practice exercises.

Practise a quantity discrepancy

Fictional scenario: the register shows 30 units but you count 28. Immediately changing the register is not the answer.

“I check the reference, unit and location, then recount according to instructions. I review recent movements and report the result with supporting records requiring checks. I do not adjust stock without approval.”

The interviewer assesses method and responsibility limits. You do not need to accuse someone to explain a difference.

Prepare for practical assessment

Practise reading a fictional delivery record, counting units and completing a clear sheet. Review Excel functions you know and check their results. Confirm units before calculating.

Ask for instructions when information is missing. Do not improvise operation of unfamiliar machinery; request appropriate training and authorisation.

Ask about organisation

  • Who approves receipts, issues and adjustments?
  • How are counts and shift handovers organised?
  • Which tools, equipment and training are provided?
  • What are the workplace, hours and proposed conditions?

Afterwards, record the answers and announced timeline. A concise follow-up can reaffirm interest without repeating your application.

Possible introduction: “My experience covers storage, counting and document handling under supervision. I can explain my method using a fictional example and learn your procedures.”
