How to succeed in an interview for a graphic design job in Cameroon

In an interview, a graphic designer should explain design decisions, listen to feedback and respond to a brief. Prepare a presentation that demonstrates both judgement and reliability. Employers also want to understand how you will collaborate.

1. Prepare two project stories

Choose one project close to the advertised duties and another showing how you solved a problem. For each, explain the need, audience, constraints, your role, an important choice and the delivery. Distinguish client work, internships, coursework and personal projects.

Adaptable example: “The brief required a poster readable on a phone. I shortened the message, strengthened the hierarchy and prepared a second format. The supervisor approved it after a text correction.”

Use this as an experience story only if it describes your work. Otherwise, introduce it as a practice scenario.

2. Explain more than personal taste

Rather than saying a colour looks nice, connect your choice to identity, readability and the message. Explain what you compared and the project’s limits. Without audience evidence, do not describe a preference as proven performance.

Fictional case: a restaurant poster contains too much text at the same size. Propose a hierarchy for the dish, fictional price and intended action, then check it on a phone. Explain what you removed or moved.

3. Respond to feedback

If someone says “it is not visible enough”, ask which element needs attention and on which medium. Restate the need before editing. Suggest a focused adjustment rather than rebuilding everything without understanding.

Prepare an example of feedback you applied and a disagreement handled calmly. Explaining an option also involves listening to the client’s constraints.

4. Clarify a recruitment test

Ask about the time limit, deliverables, available assets and assessment criteria. Check whether the work is for assessment only, how it will be retained and whether commercial use is intended. For a substantial request, clarify scope and conditions before starting.

Allocate time to reading, proposing, producing and checking. Identify third-party assets or AI used and follow the test instructions. Do not submit another employer’s confidential files.

5. Ask about production

  • Which deliverables take priority?
  • Who writes briefs and approves designs?
  • How are feedback and urgent requests coordinated?
  • Which tools, assets and equipment are provided?
  • Does the job include video, photography or social posting?

Test portfolio access and prepare a backup. Read the Kamerjob vacancy before the interview, then send any agreed follow-up materials within the stated timeline.
