How to succeed in an interview for an accounting job in Cameroon

An accounting interview checks more than technical knowledge. Employers also want to understand your method, honesty and willingness to seek approval. Prepare concrete examples matching the role’s level and your actual experience.

1. Turn the vacancy into a list of situations

Identify duties such as data entry, cash records, customer or supplier tracking, filing, reconciliations and support with closing work. For each, prepare an example you can explain. If a task is new to you, state what you have studied and what you still need to learn.

Prepare a short introduction covering your real qualification, main experience, two useful skills and motivation. Avoid reciting the entire CV.

2. Structure your answers

Explain the context, task, action, check and follow-up. Make clear who supervised or approved the work.

Adaptable example: “During my internship, I helped file invoices. I noticed that a reference appeared twice, compared the records and referred the case to the accountant before entry. The accountant confirmed the next step.”

Use this as an experience story only if it really happened. Otherwise, identify it as an interview practice scenario.

3. Handle a missing document

Fictional scenario: a manager asks you to record an expense urgently, but the supporting document is unavailable. You could say: “I clarify the transaction and missing evidence, consult the procedure and seek approval from the authorised person. I retain a record of the request and the treatment agreed.”

Do not promise to fabricate evidence or independently select a treatment you do not understand. The appropriate approach depends on applicable rules and the employer’s approval process.

4. Prepare for a practical exercise

Practise reading a small table, checking totals, identifying duplicates and explaining differences. Ask about the expected output, available documents and permitted assumptions before starting. Explain your checks instead of clicking at random.

Fictional exercise: three invoices show XAF 20,000, XAF 35,000 and XAF 15,000. The total is XAF 70,000. If a spreadsheet shows XAF 85,000, investigate the calculation range and possible duplicates, among other causes. Do not assume there is only one explanation.

5. Discuss mistakes professionally

If you made a mistake, explain how you reported it, how the correction was approved and what additional check you introduced. Do not claim that you never make mistakes. Preserving traceability is more convincing than hiding a problem.

6. Ask useful questions

  • Which duties take priority during the first weeks?
  • Who reviews and approves my work?
  • Which software and training will be available?
  • How are deadlines and busy periods organised?
  • What are the job conditions and next recruitment steps?

After the interview, note anything you need to clarify and respect the stated follow-up timeline. Browse Kamerjob vacancies and tailor your preparation to each employer.
