How to succeed in an interview for a sales role in Cameroon

A sales interview assesses listening, organisation and your ability to explain a proposal. Prepare examples relevant to the role: shop sales, field prospecting, business customers and distributor follow-up involve different tasks.

1. Introduce your background with an example

Wording to adapt: “My experience includes reception and sales. I first understand the need, then present a suitable option and organise follow-up. I can explain a situation where I clarified a request and prepared a proposal, including the limits of my role.”

If you are starting out, use internships, association work or informal selling with accurate context. Do not turn an exercise into employment or a team sale into a personal result.

2. Prepare three examples

  • Discovering a need: questions and information gathered.
  • Handling an objection: response, checks and proposed next step.
  • Following up: commitment, contact and known outcome.

Bring authorised anonymised evidence or an entirely fictional sample. Explain period, source and contribution for figures. Without reliable measurement, describe your actions.

3. Practise a role-play

If asked to sell a product, first ask about its intended user, desired use, constraints and confirmed features. Then connect a feature to an expressed need.

Fictional dialogue:
Customer: “It is too expensive.”
Candidate: “What budget did you plan, and which function is essential? I can check available options without promising an unauthorised discount.”

Suggest an appropriate next step: demonstration, approved quotation or meeting. Progress with the customer’s agreement rather than forcing a decision.

4. Discuss a difficulty honestly

Prepare a missed-target or lost-prospect example. Explain what you controlled, what depended on others and what you changed. A learning example is more useful than claiming everything always succeeded.

5. Assess the role too

Ask about territory, customer portfolio, targets, initial ramp-up, product training and resources. Clarify fixed pay, commissions, expenses and hours. For a trial, agree duration, conditions and data used.

Review the Kamerjob vacancy and public company information. Prepare a short introduction, two examples and questions. Record the agreed response timeframe afterwards.
