Receiving goods: which checks should you explain to a recruiter?

Receiving goods involves more than counting boxes. You need to identify what arrived, compare information and retain evidence of checks. Show the order of your method and limits of your approval authority.

These examples are fictional. Actual checks depend on products, contracts and employer procedures.

Identify the expected receipt

Explain how you locate the order or receiving instruction, supplier and reference. Check that the document relates to the delivery. Similar packaging does not establish item identity.

Read special instructions before handling goods. Do not enter traffic zones or stand beneath loads to read labels.

Compare reference, quantity and unit

Fictional exercise: an order specifies 6 cartons of 12 units, or 72 units. Receiving 6 cartons alone does not confirm their contents. Explain checks authorised by the procedure and how you record units.

CheckQuestion
ReferenceDoes the product match the expected item?
QuantityAre you counting units, cartons or pallets?
Visible conditionIs there visible packaging damage?
Batch or dateIs required information readable?

Visual inspection cannot replace specialist technical checks. Intact packaging does not guarantee internal product quality.

Report without improvising

“In fictional receipt REC-12, two cartons had damp packaging. I recorded the observation, identified affected references and alerted the supervisor before storage through the approved process.”

Explain who decides acceptance, rejection or segregation. Do not sign full conformity before required checks or alter supplier documents to hide differences.

Trace records and storage

Describe recording the date, reference, quantity, supporting document and approved location. Physically present goods may not be available for picking while awaiting checks.

Prepare a fictional interview sheet distinguishing received, checked and pending. Statuses must be clear and follow site rules.

Turn your method into evidence

CV example: “Supported receiving by reconciling references and quantities, carrying out instructed visual checks and reporting discrepancies for approval.”

Include only tasks actually performed. Show that you check before recording and request decisions beyond your authority.
