Interactive prototype: how to explain your navigation choices

An interactive prototype helps discuss a journey before development. In your portfolio, explain the task and navigation decisions rather than asking a recruiter to click without context.

1. Provide a starting scenario

Fictional example: “Someone wants to book a workshop in Douala on Saturday afternoon. They need to compare sessions, choose a place and review the booking.”

State the entry point and fictional data. Avoid starting links halfway through an unexplained journey.

2. Explain the main path

A simple sequence can cover list, details, selection, summary and confirmation. Explain the information needed and expected action at each step. Justify what people should see before making a commitment.

3. Include alternative paths

SituationBehaviour to demonstrate
Someone changes their mindReturn to selection without unnecessarily losing information.
No resultsHelpful message and a way to change criteria.
Missing informationSpecific error near the field and correction guidance.

You do not need to simulate the whole product. Clarify what is interactive and what is outside scope.

4. Explain labels and feedback

Use a label such as “Review my booking” if the action does not yet confirm it. Show progress and success feedback. Animation alone does not validate usability.

5. Explain your checks

With agreement, ask a relevant volunteer to perform a task. Record hesitation, errors and help provided. Without testing, say “decision to investigate”, not “validated navigation”.

Interview: “Here is the scenario, two important navigation decisions and a limitation. I can also show the return route and no-results state.”

Provide annotated screens or a short demonstration as a fallback for the interactive link.
