Field prospecting: how to highlight your organisation in a job application

Field prospecting involves preparing visits, listening to needs and keeping follow-up commitments. For a sales application in Cameroon, show how you organise work rather than simply describing yourself as energetic.
1. Plan a visit schedule with a purpose
Define target customers, authorised products and information needed before visiting. Grouping appointments by area can support travel planning, but account for contacts’ availability and actual journey conditions.
A demonstration exercise could cover three fictional shops in one territory. Explain the proposed order, travel allowance and how you would adjust if an appointment were cancelled.
2. Show a simple tracker
| Fictional prospect | Observed situation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Shop A | Manager absent. | Confirm a time before returning. |
| Shop B | Need identified; quotation requested. | Prepare a proposal for approval. |
| Shop C | No current need; declines follow-up. | Record the refusal and stop pursuing. |
This demonstrates a method, not a completed campaign. An interested prospect is not yet a customer. Keep only necessary information in company-approved tools.
3. Prepare your introduction
Fictional example: “Hello, I represent [company]. We provide [product or service]. Is this a good time to ask two questions about your needs? If not, when would suit you?”
State your identity and purpose. Avoid unverified promises, unauthorised discounts and repeated contact after refusal.
4. Write an actionable report
Separate completed visits, qualified needs, quotation requests, orders and pending decisions. Identify blockers such as stock confirmation, pricing approval or missing documentation. A colleague should be able to continue without repeating the entire conversation.
5. Use the method in your application
CV wording, only if accurate: “Organised territory visits, qualified customer needs and tracked next actions in a sales register.”
Without experience: “Personal exercise: prepared a visit schedule and tracker for three fictional prospects; no real sales claimed.”
Explain how you choose the next action and handle disruptions. Ask about transport, phone, documentation, travel safety and any authorised payment-collection procedure.
