Urgent construction vacancy: what to check before travelling

“Labourers needed, start tomorrow!” An urgent advert may reflect a real need, but urgency does not replace checks. Before paying for transport in Cameroon, confirm that the position is still available, the contact represents the site and your attendance is expected.

A brief advert is not automatically fraudulent. Equally, a logo, photograph or reassuring message is insufficient proof of reliability. Here is a simple way to make a better-informed decision.

1. Return to the complete advert

If you received a screenshot or forwarded message, look for the original vacancy link. On Kamerjob, read the title, description, location, date, any deadline and application instructions. Check whether the listing says recruitment is closed.

“Today”, “tomorrow” and “urgent” relate to the original publication. Messages may circulate after recruitment ends. A visible advert does not guarantee a vacant position.

Fictional example: a message forwarded on Monday says “come tomorrow”, but the original was posted the previous week. Ask for a full date before planning travel.

2. Identify the person responding

Ask their name, role and connection to the site: direct supervisor, company or intermediary assembling a team. Check consistency with the advert. If a company is named, find an independent contact route and check that this person recruits for it.

A sudden change of number, identity or location needs explanation. A profile picture, card sent through WhatsApp or map pin alone is not proof.

“Hello, I am contacting you about [title/link]. What is your role on the site and who should I report to? Is the position still available for [full date]?”

3. Obtain a precise appointment

Ask for the address, neighbourhood, landmark, entrance, time and person to meet. Clarify whether this is an interview, selection, trial or start of work. “Come and we will see” does not mean you have been hired.

Check the route and return cost. Ask about postponement and how you will be notified. Tell a trusted person where and when your appointment is.

“Is my attendance confirmed? Is this an interview or the start of work? Could you send the exact entrance and supervisor’s name?”

4. Clarify duties and conditions

Before travelling, clarify tasks, expected experience, supervision and equipment supplied or requested. Check hours, duration, personal pay, payment date and method, and any transport or meal costs.

If a trial is proposed, ask about its length, conditions and any payment. Do not promise specialist work you have not mastered. Urgency does not justify dangerous tasks without appropriate training and supervision.

  • Which specific role: labourer, assistant or skilled worker?
  • Which days and how many hours are planned?
  • Who gives instructions and who pays?
  • What happens with waiting, postponement or an extension?

5. Recognise requests that call for pausing

Do not pay an unverified contact to reserve a position, unlock an application or guarantee inclusion in the team. Pressure such as “pay immediately or lose the job” calls for stepping back.

Never share a verification code, password or Mobile Money PIN. Before sending an identity document copy, verify the recipient, purpose and channel; limit information to what is genuinely necessary. Do not leave your original identity document with an unknown contact.

Persistent refusal to clarify the location, duties or supervisor’s identity, conflicting information or a last-minute move to an isolated location justify postponing the appointment until essential points are clarified.

6. Keep records and report suspicious details

Keep the advert link, dates and relevant messages. If a Kamerjob advert looks suspicious, use the reporting option on its listing and describe the facts: a request for money, inconsistent identity or another specific concern. A report raises a concern for review; it does not itself prove fraud.

Avoid publicly sharing identity documents or accusations. For your own decision, distinguish confirmed information, points requiring clarification and warning signs that lead you not to travel.

Summary message: “My understanding is: appointment on [date] at [time], at [location], for [interview/assignment], reporting to [supervisor], with [agreed conditions]. Could you confirm these details before I leave?”

No reply does not confirm your attendance. Continue checking vacancies and tracking applications. Also read how to organise short assignments and what message to send through WhatsApp.
