Mechatronics: how to present mechanical, electrical and automation skills?

Mechatronics connects several disciplines within a system. Listing mechanics, electricity and automation is not enough. Show the links you understand and tasks performed in each area.

Map your skills

Choose a familiar project or equipment family. Explain its function and mechanical, electrical and control elements. Simulation programming does not establish full industrial installation expertise.

AreaPossible evidenceLimit
MechanicsDrawing interpretation or assembly studyStudy, observation or execution
ElectricalSchematic reading during trainingNo universal intervention authorisation
AutomationSimulated programme and test reportSimulation differs from commissioning

Present an integrated project

Fictional example: a teaching model sorts objects using sensor information. Explain intended function, information, control decisions and represented movements without providing real-machine wiring or modification instructions.

“Academic project: contributed to sequence modelling and simulated testing. Documented results and limitations; no industrial commissioning performed.”

Identify your individual contribution and teammates’ tasks rather than claiming the entire project.

Show verification

Describe test cases, expected behaviour and observations. Explain how mismatches were recorded and reviewed. A screen showing running status does not prove real equipment performance or safety.

Use fictional or approved material. Do not publish employer drawings or parameters.

Describe level accurately

Name tools and actual uses: drawing, interpretation, simulation or tracking. Identify independent and supervised work. Training does not replace authorisations and site procedures.

Prepare the application

“Mechanical and electrical document interpretation; academic automation simulation and test reporting.”

Adapt this to your background. Explain one project without excessive jargon. Understanding interfaces and stating limits are valuable alongside technical skills.
