Labourer, mason’s assistant or mason: how should you apply?

Construction adverts for a labourer, mason’s assistant and mason may look similar. Yet employers do not always expect the same practical skills or independence. When applying in Cameroon, start with the actual duties and explain clearly what you can do.
Job titles vary between companies and sites. The following distinctions are practical pointers, not an official classification. Always check the job description and supervision arrangements.
1. Labourer: demonstrate reliability and initial experience
A labourer generally supports the team with supplies, storage or preparation of the working area under instructions. Exact duties and handling equipment should be clarified. The role does not mean accepting every operation or lifting an unsuitable load alone.
State your neighbourhood, availability and work you have actually helped with. Use concrete examples of punctuality, listening and following instructions.
Fictional example: “I am looking for a labourer position in Douala. I have helped supply a team and store equipment on two small sites. I work under instructions and am available from [date].”
2. Mason’s assistant: explain what you do under supervision
A mason’s assistant works more directly alongside a mason. Depending on the site and training, this may involve preparing equipment, helping with specific stages and carrying out supervised tasks. Watching an operation does not mean being able to perform it independently.
Explain who supervised you, for how long and on which tasks. If you are still learning block laying or rendering, say so. Do not present a developing skill as independent mastery.
Fictional example: “For three months, I assisted a mason on boundary wall projects. I prepared the work area and equipment under instructions. I am learning block laying under supervision and would like to continue as a mason’s assistant.”
3. Mason: provide evidence of skills you have mastered
A mason’s application should describe the structures and operations you can actually handle, such as block walls or rendering, depending on your specialism. Explain your independence, the checks you carry out and the limits of your experience. The title does not imply mastery of every technique.
Prepare two or three examples: type of work, period, personal contribution and a supervisor who has agreed to confirm your involvement. Authorised photographs can support your explanation; distinguish your contribution from the team’s work.
Fictional example: “I have built block boundary walls on [number] projects. I can explain my working stages and show authorised photographs. I still need supervision for [technique not mastered].”
4. Read the advert before choosing your job title
The Logbessou advert on Kamerjob distinguished two mason positions from one labourer position. It illustrates why you should specify the role you want rather than simply saying you need work. This advert was checked on 18 October 2026; confirm current availability.
- Which tasks will I perform and with what supervision?
- What experience, training or practical demonstration is required?
- Which suitable tools and protective equipment are supplied?
- What hours, pay, payment arrangements and duration are planned?
If a trial is proposed, clarify its length, conditions and any payment before starting. Do not perform specialist or dangerous work without suitable training and authorisation.
5. Send a message that matches your level
“Hello, I am contacting you about the [job title] position advertised on Kamerjob. I live in [neighbourhood]. I have worked on [projects] for [duration] and can carry out [specific tasks] [independently/under supervision]. I am available from [date]. Is the position still available, and could we clarify duties and conditions?”
