Storekeeper: how to demonstrate accuracy in receiving and stocktaking?

A storekeeper demonstrates accuracy through specific actions: identifying an item, counting in the correct unit, recording movements and reporting discrepancies. Explain this method in your application rather than simply describing yourself as organised.
All examples below are fictional. Use them to prepare your CV or interview, clearly distinguishing actual experience from personal exercises.
Describe receiving checks
Explain how you compare the expected reference, delivery document and goods received. Identify checks you performed on quantities, visible condition, batches or dates according to site instructions. Distinguish packages from units: five cartons do not mean five individual items.
CV example: “Supported receiving by checking references and quantities, recording movements and reporting discrepancies to the supervisor.” Use only if accurate.

Explain your stocktaking method
Define the counting area, item reference and unit. Follow instructions for movements during counting to avoid double counts or missed issues. Record the result before proposing an explanation.
| Fictional example | Recorded stock | Count | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Item A, individual units | 40 | 38 | Recount and check movements |
| Item B, cartons | 12 | 12 | Record the check |
A discrepancy is not proof of theft. It can arise from an unrecorded movement, incorrect unit or misplaced stock. Do not adjust records to match the count without approval.
Prepare simple evidence
Create a fictional sheet containing reference, location, unit, quantity, date, checker and observations. Explain how you handle blanks and how a colleague could continue your work. Do not share former employers’ files.
Describe a verifiable result
Interview example: “I counted a zone and recorded results. A difference was recounted and reported with the movements requiring checks. The supervisor approved any adjustment after verification.”
A traceable count or explained discrepancy is a useful result. If quoting an accuracy rate, explain its calculation and period. Do not claim sole credit for a team outcome.
Connect accuracy and safety
Describe respect for access controls, storage rules and handling instructions. Do not claim equipment operation without suitable training and authorisation. Accuracy includes recognising situations beyond your responsibility.
