Debt recovery legal officer: which skills should you highlight in your application?

An invoice remains unpaid, a customer disputes a delivery, or a promised payment never arrives: a debt recovery legal officer needs to understand the file, organise communication and recommend the next step to their supervisor. Your application should show how you work with documents, figures and people.
In Cameroon, these duties may form part of an in-house legal role. Here is how to present your skills, including experience gained during an internship. All scenarios and figures below are fictional application exercises, not advice on a specific legal procedure.
1. Start with the actual job requirements
The Chicaparts Africa in-house legal vacancy in Yaoundé, reviewed on Kamerjob on 18 October 2026, lists recovery of customer debts, dispute management, contract drafting and review, and legal monitoring. It mentions precise writing and negotiation skills and accepts beginners in this particular advertisement. Check availability and conditions before applying.
Select three duties from your target advertisement and match each to evidence: an internship assignment, a university exercise or an administrative task. Always identify simulations and work carried out under supervision.
2. Show how you assemble and check a file
Explain how you organise contracts, invoices, delivery evidence, payment records and relevant correspondence. Describe how you flag missing documents or inconsistent amounts to accounting and the supervising legal officer.
CV example, to use only if accurate: “Supported preparation of debt files by organising supporting documents, reconciling invoices and payments, and summarising discrepancies for review by the supervising legal officer.”
In a fictional exercise, an invoice for FCFA 450,000 and a confirmed payment of FCFA 150,000 leave FCFA 300,000, before checking credit notes, disputes and other payments. Demonstrate your verification method rather than treating an unchecked figure as an established debt.
3. Write clear, professional reminders
A useful reminder identifies the file, sets out verified information and requests a concrete response. Show that you can remain calm, listen to a dispute and record discussions factually. Avoid threats, unapproved enforcement statements or disclosure to third parties.
Fictional informal reminder: “Hello, unless we are mistaken, our records show an outstanding balance of FCFA 300,000 on fictional invoice F-024. Could you confirm receipt of the invoice and advise your expected payment date? If payment has already been made or any item is disputed, please let us know so that we can check the file. Kind regards.”
This example is not a formal legal notice. In employment, follow the company’s approved templates, authorisation process and communication channels.

4. Demonstrate organisation with a simple tracker
Excel or Google Sheets can help track files. Name the functions you actually know: filters, balance calculations, duplicate checks or summary tables. A practice tracker can include the reference, verified amount, any dispute, last action, next action and person responsible.
| Fictional file | Situation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| A-01 | Balance awaiting accounting confirmation | Reconcile payments before sending a reminder |
| A-02 | Delivery disputed | Obtain supporting records from the sales team |
| A-03 | Payment schedule proposed | Submit to the authorised decision-maker |
When describing results, distinguish money received from promises to pay. Do not claim sole credit for a team recovery. If you quote a rate, explain its calculation base and reporting period.
5. Explain your legal knowledge and decision-making limits
Present your knowledge of obligations, contracts, evidence and debt recovery, identifying the course or files studied. In an interview exercise, explain how you would find the applicable texts, check the current version and submit your analysis for review. Procedures, deadlines and authorised professionals must be checked for each case with the responsible practitioner.
Interview example: “I first check supporting documents and reconcile the balance with accounting. I distinguish delayed payment from a documented dispute. I prepare a summary and options for approval; I do not independently initiate proceedings or accept arrangements beyond my authority.”
6. Submit a focused, confidential application
Send a tailored CV and, if requested, a completely fictional one-page exercise covering the file status, available evidence, unresolved question and proposed next action. Do not include real debtors’ names, contact details, contracts or internal statements. Check file comments and metadata as well.
Application example: “Hello, I am applying for the debt recovery legal officer position. During my internship, I helped organise supporting documents and track files under supervision. I can present a fictional reconciliation and reminder exercise. Please find my CV attached. I am available for an interview.”
