FIFO and FEFO: how to explain these methods with practical examples?

An interviewer may ask which batch should be issued first. Saying “the oldest” without defining the criterion can be misleading. FIFO follows receipt order; FEFO prioritises the earliest expiry date.

Understand the criteria

FIFO means First In, First Out. FEFO means First Expiry, First Out. WHO’s health-supply operations guidance distinguishes receipt-based and expiry-based rotation. This is a sector-specific illustration; follow employer procedures and product requirements.

FEFO does not mean issuing expired goods. Blocked, damaged or nonconforming products do not become usable because they are oldest.

Compare two fictional batches

For an exercise dated 19 October 2026, consider two batches of the same item, both available, compliant and unreserved:

BatchReceivedFictional expiry
A1 October 202631 March 2027
B10 October 202631 January 2027

Under FIFO, A comes first because it arrived earlier. Under FEFO, B comes first because it expires earlier. The order changes with the method. A recipient’s remaining-shelf-life requirement may also need checking before issue.

Identify necessary information

Check the item, batch, receipt date, expiry date, quantity and status. If a date is missing or unreadable, request clarification rather than inferring it from packaging.

Keep information accessible in storage and the system according to instructions. Physical position alone is unreliable because goods may have been moved.

Answer an interview scenario

“I first verify the item, batch, dates and status. I follow the required rotation method. Under FEFO, I prioritise the available batch with the earliest expiry, subject to issue criteria and remaining validity. If uncertain, I request approval before picking.”

Do not describe one method as universal. Quality, destination and storage requirements still apply.

Present experience honestly

CV example: “Supported FIFO/FEFO rotation according to instructions, checking batches and dates under supervision.” Use only if you performed these checks. Otherwise, identify your batch table as a personal exercise.

Explaining receipt date versus expiry date demonstrates understanding relevant to accurate picking and error prevention.
