Fault diagnosis: how to explain your reasoning to a recruiter?

Recruiters need more than the name of a replaced component. Explain how you move from a report to verified analysis, which information you use and your responsibility limits.
These fictional cases support interviews, not diagnosis on real machines.
Start with a precise symptom
“The machine does not work” is too broad. Identify equipment, reporting time and described behaviour. Separate operator statements from personal observations.
“The operator reports intermittent stopping after one cycle phase. Exact timing and displayed messages require confirmation. The cause is not established.”

Separate facts, hypotheses and checks
| Category | Fictional example |
|---|---|
| Available fact | A stoppage appears in history |
| Question | Does it recur under the same conditions? |
| Hypothesis | A cause category to review with the supervisor |
| Next step | Define authorised checks before action |
A hypothesis is not a confirmed diagnosis. Unjustified replacement of several parts does not demonstrate method.
Explain your information sources
Describe authorised history, reports and documentation. Explain how you would confirm missing data. Measurements require context and appropriate checking conditions.
Competent personnel must define actual checks and suitable safety procedures. Do not suggest bypassing safeguards or random parameter changes to reproduce symptoms.
Describe your contribution
“I organised reported symptoms and reviewed previous interventions. I highlighted inconsistencies for the supervising technician to guide checks. My role concerned documentary analysis and reporting, not independent diagnostic approval.”
Adapt this to real work or identify a practice case. For checks performed, explain authorisation and review without disclosing sensitive data.
Define what the result establishes
Distinguish disappearance during one test from a confirmed cause and sustained performance. Record checks, reservations and approvals.
CV example: “Supported diagnosis through symptom collection, history review and supervised recording of findings.” Demonstrate explainable reasoning and willingness to seek help when evidence is insufficient.
