From farm worker to team leader: which skills should you develop?

Becoming a farm team leader involves more than working quickly. You need to organise tasks, explain instructions, check progress and report problems to farm management.

1. Strengthen practical knowledge

Identify operations you know and areas needing training. Understand your authority: do not independently decide technical interventions beyond your competence or authorisation.

2. Learn to plan a day

Clarify goals, available people, tools and constraints. Allocate work according to skills and management instructions. Plan checks and information to report.

ResponsibilityPossible evidence
OrganisationSimple plan with tasks, people and checkpoints.
InstructionRephrased guidance and checked understanding.
Follow-upReport covering completion, difficulties and decisions needed.
PreventionReported defective tool and requested an appropriate solution.

3. Describe coordination experience

Fictional example: “During supervised group work, helped allocate areas, explained instructions and arranged supervisor checks of initial results. Reported missing tools and kept progress records.”

If you were not formally team leader, say you helped coordinate. Occasional assistance is not the same as supervisory responsibility.

4. Communicate respectfully

Give understandable guidance, listen and avoid public blame. Clarify priorities during disagreements or unexpected events. Speed should not override protection or procedures.

5. Prepare progression

Request a small supervised responsibility, such as welcoming a new worker, tracking one area or preparing daily reports. Record feedback and learning. Bring examples of organisation, instruction and handling difficulties, with your exact role.
