From technician to maintenance manager: which skills should you develop?

Maintenance management requires more than solving faults. It involves priorities, resources, team development and reporting. Demonstrate verifiable coordination responsibilities rather than claiming a future title.

Move from individual work to a wider scope

Understand equipment, production needs and resource constraints. Managers may coordinate work and interfaces without independently approving every investment or technical decision.

Seek a supervised assignment such as preparing a review, coordinating handover or consolidating pending work. Define duration and decisions retained by management.

Schedules need to consider skills, availability and working conditions. Do not promise restart based solely on a commercial deadline.

Develop coaching

“I helped a new colleague understand report structure and distinguish completed actions from approved status. Technical decisions remained with the supervisor.”

Explain clear instructions, understanding checks and training escalation. Pressure to work faster cannot replace missing competence.

Use defined indicators

Track open work, age or recurring actions within a specified scope. Define dates, measures and sources. Do not claim reduced failures without a comparable baseline and clear individual versus team contributions.

A fictional exercise can list three jobs, blockers and decisions required. Indicators should guide priorities rather than hide difficult cases.

Prepare progression evidence

Use approved or fictional schedules, coordination notes and action trackers. Exclude identifiable evaluations, internal costs and confidential drawings.

CV example: “Supported maintenance coordination by consolidating pending work, preparing handovers and following actions under managerial approval.”

Adapt to actual experience. Ask about scope, resources, responsibilities and management support. Demonstrate more reliable teamwork within decision-making and safety limits.
