IT technician CV: how to present internships and personal projects

A junior IT CV can be convincing without years of employment. Recruiters need to understand where you practised, what you did and how independently you worked. Keep internships separate from personal projects.

1. Label experience accurately

Use separate sections for “Internships and experience” and “Projects and practical work”. Give dates, context, tools and your role. Say “observed” when you watched an operation, and “under supervision” when someone guided or approved your work.

2. Replace vague claims with actions

Vague claimMore specific, if accurate
Computer maintenanceInternship: prepared workstations using a checklist under technician supervision.
Good at networkingPersonal project: documented a virtual network diagram, IP configuration and connectivity tests.
User supportVoluntary work: explained office software procedures and checked understanding with users.

3. Include the project’s limits

Fictional example: “Personal lab — September 2026. Created two virtual machines on an isolated network, checked IP settings and a file share, and wrote a report. Completed independently, with no business deployment.”

Link to a clean project summary or repository containing no real user data or secrets. Identify what you configured yourself and what you followed from a tutorial.

4. Make skills assessable

Group skills by workstation tasks, networking, user support and documentation. Avoid unexplained proficiency percentages. A passed certification, completed training and an exam you are preparing for must be labelled differently.

5. Review the application

Does the CV title match the vacancy? Does each key skill have an example? Do your links work? State your city, availability and actual language level. Prepare a two-minute explanation of your strongest project: goal, approach, verified result and next improvement.
