Sales representative: how to present results without inventing figures

“I am a good salesperson” gives a recruiter little evidence. A convincing application explains your territory, actions and results you can substantiate. Even without a complete dashboard, you can demonstrate a method without inventing sales or percentages.
1. Separate activity, sales and payments
Calls, completed visits and prepared quotations describe activity. Approved orders, recognised sales and received payments are different stages. Do not add them together as though they were the same result.
| Metric | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Prospects contacted | Period, channel and how distinct contacts are counted. |
| Orders | Approved orders, cancellations and your contribution. |
| Revenue | Scope, period, source and company measurement rules. |
| Target achievement | Target and result measured on a comparable basis. |
2. Put figures in context
Fictional exercise, not personal experience to copy: a representative has a monthly target of 500,000 FCFA in eligible sales. The validated result on the same basis is 600,000 FCFA. Target achievement is 600,000 ÷ 500,000 × 100 = 120%.
This does not establish 20% growth over the previous month or payment of every invoice. Explain the product, territory, period and available resources. For a team result, describe your contribution instead of claiming the whole amount.
3. Use verifiable wording
Where information is available and shareable, you could write: “Managed follow-up for retail outlets in a defined territory; monthly results checked against sales reports.” Include amounts only when you can justify them and disclosure is authorised.
Without reliable figures, describe the work: “Prospected retail outlets, presented products, prepared orders and followed up on an agreed schedule.” Explain a specific case: identified need, proposal, objection and next step.
4. Protect client information
Show an entirely fictional demonstration tracker, a reporting template or explain the reporting structure. Never publish a former employer’s client names, numbers, negotiated prices or contact lists. Label reconstructed files accurately.
5. Discuss missed targets honestly
Give the actual result, obstacles and adjustments, such as better qualification, more relevant follow-up or reorganised visits. Do not promise guaranteed sales. Prepare a short interview answer covering context, personal action, evidence and learning.
