Driver, forklift operator or heavy equipment operator: how do applications differ?

One advert asks for a driver, another for a forklift operator and a third for an equipment operator. All involve operating a vehicle or machine, but they do not automatically require the same skills. Before applying, examine the duties and equipment, then check the qualifications requested.
This guide helps candidates in Cameroon select vacancies matching their experience. CV examples are fictional: adapt them without claiming training or independence you do not have.
1. Driver: specify the vehicle and transport activity
The role may involve a car, truck, bus or tractor unit with a semi-trailer. Duties vary: passenger journeys, goods delivery, transport paperwork and routine vehicle care.
The KM International truck driver advert in Kribi specified a category CE licence, delivery notes and a journey log. Your CV should identify vehicles actually driven, routes and paperwork used.
“[Vehicle] driver — [setting], [dates]. Transported [passengers or goods] across [areas], maintained assigned documents and reported faults. Valid category [category] licence.”
2. Forklift operator: describe your equipment experience
A forklift operator handles and moves loads with equipment suited to the site’s operations. The role may include loading, unloading, storage and coordination with logistics teams, depending on the position.
The SCDP advert for four “chauffeurs caristes” concerned forklift operation and related logistics duties. “Chauffeur” in that title therefore did not simply mean road driving.
Specify forklift types actually used, the working environment and your level of independence. Experience on one model does not establish competence on every other machine.
“Forklift operator — [business], [dates]. Used [equipment actually operated] for [operations]. Worked in [warehouse or site], following traffic and handling instructions. Training: [exact title, provider, date].”
3. Equipment operator: identify the speciality
“Equipment” may refer to construction machinery, port handling equipment or other specialist machines. Excavator, crane and terminal equipment operators are not automatically interchangeable.
The KCT “Conducteur d’Engins (Permis G)” advert described container movements under instructions, fault reporting and handing information to the next shift. Its licence requirement belongs to that advert; it is not a universal rule for every machine.
“[Machine] operator — [site], [dates]. Completed [operations] under supervisor instructions, performed required checks, reported defects and handed over end-of-shift information.”
The three adverts were reviewed on 18 October 2026. They illustrate recruitment needs rather than being presented as currently available positions.
4. Compare qualifications without assuming equivalence
For each application, check the licence, training, supporting documents and any authorisation or assessment conditions requested for the equipment and site. A road licence alone does not demonstrate forklift competence; forklift training does not demonstrate the ability to drive a truck on the road.
If an advert names a certification, ask for its exact title and accepted documents. Do not treat a foreign certificate, training record or licence category as automatically equivalent to another. When uncertain, confirm applicable requirements with the employer and competent organisation.
A useful question: “I have used [equipment] in [setting]. Could you specify the model, qualifications and assessment required before starting?”
5. Present your strengths and limits
Organisation, communication and reporting faults can be useful across several occupations. Present them as transferable skills while distinguishing technical competence on each machine.
If you only observed or assisted an operator, state that. Supervised participation is not independent operating experience. To progress, request suitable training and assessment rather than accepting an improvised trial on unfamiliar machinery.
Prepare a real interview example: clarifying an instruction, reporting a defect or organising a clear handover. Explain your action and outcome without disclosing confidential site information.
6. Check these points before applying
- Have I identified the exact machine or vehicle?
- Do the duties match my actual experience?
- Are the qualification requirements clear and verified?
- Does my CV distinguish training, assistance and independent operation?
- Have I clarified supervision, equipment and any practical assessment?
