Legal and tax assistant: which skills should you highlight in your application?

Applying for a legal and tax assistant role in Cameroon? Show how you connect legal research, accounting documents and obligation tracking. Describe specific tasks and supervision rather than simply listing subjects studied.

The fictional examples below should be adapted to your background. They concern applications, not tax calculations or legal advice for a real case.

1. Understand duties behind the title

The OFI legal and tax assistant vacancy in Douala, checked on 18 October 2026, mentions declarations, supporting-document checks, tax-review files and tracking contracts and obligations. It requests a degree or equivalent, two years of accumulated internships and good French and English communication. Verify current status and full requirements before applying.

An internship title therefore does not guarantee access without experience. Compare your background with each advert and distinguish required skills from those still developing.

2. Show your research and monitoring method

Identify areas actually studied or practised: tax, business, OHADA law or other relevant topics. Explain how you frame a question, consult official sources and check dates and scope before submitting a synthesis.

CV example: “Documentary research on [topic] and draft summaries with references and points requiring verification, reviewed by the supervisor.”

Coursework demonstrates academic knowledge, not automatically professional mastery. Be ready to explain a research task and its limits without inventing references.

3. Describe document checks accurately

Specify actual work: comparing documents, checking supporting evidence is present, identifying inconsistent information or updating missing-document lists. Distinguish preparation from final approval.

Fictional example: “I noticed a difference between invoice information and the related file. I flagged it, documented the clarification request and followed up receipt of the supporting document.”

Do not claim to have certified tax compliance or independently filed a return if you provided supervised support. Knowing when to request approval also demonstrates quality.

4. Present tracking tools

Show concrete Excel or equivalent skills: filters, formulas you actually understand, document tracking and progress updates. Prepare fictional columns for file, document needed, deadline to verify, reviewer and status.

Portfolio exercise: build a table of three invented files and explain how to identify a missing document, unconfirmed date and pending action. Label dates as fictional.

A spreadsheet organises follow-up; it does not itself validate tax treatment. Do not reuse old schedules without checking or add assumed statutory dates to the demonstration.

Explain how you request information from accounting, purchasing or sales and raise questions with the appropriate reviewer. Contracts, invoices and transactions need context.

Interview example: “Before drafting my note, I clarify the transaction and documents available. I separate confirmed facts from assumptions and have technical points reviewed by the responsible person.”

For languages, describe tasks you can perform: reading documents, drafting emails or explaining issues aloud. Do not claim bilingual proficiency beyond your actual level.

6. Tailor your CV and message

Match three requirements with truthful internship, academic or professional evidence. Distinguish categories and state dates and supervision.

CV entry: “Internship — [organisation, dates]. Supported preparation of legal and tax files: organised supporting documents, updated tracking and conducted research. Work reviewed by [role].”
Message: “Hello, I am applying for [role]. My training in [field] and experience in [specific tasks] relate to [advertised duty]. My CV explains my contributions and practical level. I am available for an interview.”

If inexperienced in a required area, explain your level and learning goal. A personal exercise does not replace required years of experience.

7. Protect data and clarify the role

Do not send confidential returns, accounting files, contracts or client identifiers as evidence without appropriate permission. Use fictional data; removing names may not prevent identification. Check comments and metadata too.

Before accepting, ask who supervises and approves work, which tools are supplied and what hours and allowance or pay apply. For assessments, clarify permitted resources and assistance.
